A man shot Tuesday in a university district neighborhood remains in critical condition as detectives continue to look for the shooter, Anchorage police said.
So far, police have no description of a possible suspect to release. And detectives were unable to interview the victim, 39-year-old Charles Sherrill, at a hospital Wednesday, said police Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz.
According to a police spokesman, Sherrill called 911 about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday saying he'd been shot in the upper leg on 42nd Avenue near Dale Street, less than a mile from Anchorage Police Department headquarters. Markiewicz said Wednesday the shooting happened outside in or near the street. Officers swarmed the area, shut down the street, and Sherrill was taken to a hospital and soon in surgery, police said.
Sherrill was either unconscious or otherwise unable to speak to two detectives who visited him at the hospital Wednesday afternoon, Markiewicz said. Several witnesses have told the investigators what they saw and heard, but no motive has become apparent yet, the sergeant said.
"We're still investigating, and frankly we don't have it," he said. "We are still trying to piece it together, find out what happened and why it happened. I'm confident we will get there."
