Wreck snarls Glenn Highway traffic

A collision between a car, a school district van and a fire truck closed the Glenn Highway's inbound lanes just before 10 a.m., police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said.

It was about 9:50 a.m. when a Chevrolet Monte Carlo heading into Anchorage lost control near Turpin Street and hit an Anchorage School District van, Parker said. The Monte Carlo careened off the van and struck a ladder truck operated by firefighters from an Eagle River station, Parker said.

Two people were initially reported as trapped in the Monte Carlo, and rescuers pulled them out, Parker said. They were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The driver of the school district van was also slightly injured but declined transport to a hospital, Parker said.

"There was no indication there were kids on (the van)," Parker said. "That could be corrected later on."

As of 11 a.m., one inbound lane had been reopened for traffic, and officers expected the highway to fully reopen by 11:30 a.m., police said.
