Tomsich, Bohman claim top spots in Turkey Trot 5-K

Tomsich, Bohman claim top spots in Turkey Trot 5-K

After guiding the UAA men to third place in last week's NCAA Division II national cross country championships, assistant coaches Anthony Tomsich and T.J. Garlatz flashed their own speed Saturday in the annual Turkey Trot 5-kilometer race.

Tomsich topped a field of 515 runners who ignored the cold to race five kilometers on the Coastal Trail. He won in 16 minutes, 33 seconds, with Garlatz second in 17:06.

Former UAA runner Emma Bohman, who was coming off a seventh-place finish in last month's Marine Corps Marathon, topped the women and finished 14th overall in 19:03. She edged UAA's Susan Bick, her former teammate, by two seconds.

The 5-K race drew 478 and the 2-K Mini Turkey drew 37. The turnout was four times what it was last year, when the race was held on the Bartlett High trails. Skinny Raven took over the annual event and moved it to the Coastal Trail downtown, with plans to put it entirely on downtown streets next year, according to Skinny Raven's John Clark.

The race raised $2,000 for the Food Bank of Alaska and the Team Alaska Track Club. Clark said the track club will use its share of the funds to help sent Anchorage high school runners to the Footlocker regional championships Saturday in California.
