Two brothers are dead after a wave swamped their boat near Tenakee Springs in Southeast Alaska late Friday, state troopers say.
Juneau residents Casey and Kelly Newman were in an 18-foot skiff with their friend Jim Brown Jr. Friday night when a wave came over the back of the boat, causing the boat to sink, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said.
Brown, 20, swam to shore, but Casey Newman, 26, and Kelly Newman, 23, were later found dead, Peters said.
As a Coast Guard helicopter was flying to the reported boat sinking, good Samaritans in the area found Kelly Newman in the water but were unable to revive him, said Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley. The helicopter crew searched for Casey Newman without finding him Friday night, Mosley said. Divers using an underwater camera found and recovered his body Saturday, Peters said.
The elder Newman brother was reportedly wearing a life jacket but lost it while struggling in the water, Peters said. The troopers spokeswoman was not sure if all three men had been wearing flotation devices.
