Charlotte used a solid team effort to win the Great Alaska Shootout championship game at Sullivan Arena on Saturday night.

All nine players who logged minutes for the 49ers scored and they led from start to finish in a 67-59 win over Northeastern.

"I love my team," said Charlotte sophomore Pierria Henry, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player. "I love how hard work shows. It shows our team is a family."

Henry scored six points, grabbed five rebounds, stole the ball three times and dished three assists, but his contributions went beyond any statistic.

"He's the heart and soul of the team," Charlotte coach Alan Major said. "He's a great defender, extremely tough, and he just absolutely finds a way to get a win."

Chris Braswell led the 49ers (6-0) with 14 points, Terrence Williams made all nine of his free throws to finish with 13 points and Darion Clark hit 4 of 5 field-goal attempts in a 10-point effort.

Northeastern's Joel Smith scored a game-high 19 points, burying five treys. David Walker drained three long bombs on his way to 13 points.

Charlotte's strong play started with the opening tip. Seven different players scored before halftime and nine players logged at least nine minutes in the opening frame. The 49ers scored the game's first nine points while opening on a 14-3 run.

"I just felt like they came out more aggressive," Smith said. "We should have been more stubborn and stuck to what we wanted."

Northeastern (4-2) made only one of its first 10 field goal attempts, falling behind by double digits before the first 10 minutes expired.

The Huskies got back in the game by heating up from long range. They buried four 3-pointers in the span of about four minutes, two coming from Smith, to pull within 19-15, but Charlotte closed the half on an 11-4 run to regain control.

Every time Northeastern threatened to make it close in the second half, Charlotte had an answer. Dinko Marshavelski scored on two consecutive possessions to bring the Huskies to within 36-31 with more than 13 minutes remaining, but the 49ers came back with an 8-0 run that included back-to-back lay ups from Braswell.

Northeastern's last two field goals were 3-pointers in the final minute. Walker hit one and Smith drilled another to cut the lead to 63-59 with just more than 30 seconds left.

Immediately after, Braswell extended the lead back to six points with a score in the post and Henry stole the ball before Northeastern could cross half court. Henry wound up on the ground, clutching the ball as his team called a timeout.

The entire team came off the bench and encircled Henry as he made his way back to the bench. Braswell scored the game's last points from the free-throw line and the game ended with Charlotte dribbling out the clock after a missed 3-pointer by Smith.

"It's fantastic, it's phenomenal to win here in Alaska," Braswell said. "We're a long way from Charlotte."
