I would like to express my gratitude to former Gov. Bill Sheffield for showing his support of a natural gas line in Alaska (Compass, Nov. 24).
A couple days after his article appeared in the Anchorage Daily News, an article in the Sunday paper announced Enstar Natural Gas would raise their rates by 13 percent in 2013. The day after that, KTUU reported that the local power companies would need to raise their rates by 5-8 percent in the coming years and that their rate increases were tied to natural gas prices and pending contracts. In less than one week, local residents are given advance notice of pending utility rate increases of 18-21 percent!
I’m not sure if the market is right for natural gas export from Alaska but from my vantage point, the market is ready here in Alaska. It will take several years to design, permit and build a gas line to support the Alaska market so let’s see what we can do to get this vital project moving forward once and for all.
