Hot picks: Indie Showcase, John Lee Hooker Jr., Mr. Whitekeys

Just dance

Get your fix of drum and bass, house and dubstep at 1.21 Gigawatts, an electronic music dance party at the AT&T Sports Pavilion headlined by Mark Instinct and Pete Down and featuring a slew of local DJs. The party starts 9 p.m. Saturday, with tickets ranging from $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $45 for VIP. For more info visit facebook.com/kskevents

Holiday jeer

Mr. Whitekeys and the Whale Fat Follies have returned with "Christmas in Spenard" at Tap Root, site of the old Fly By Night Club that hosted the musical comedy for 21 years. This year the show, which includes "approximately three minutes of sentimental holiday fluff," runs 6:45 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Dec. 19, plus Dec. 26 and 27. Tickets are $11-$21 and available at centertix.net, but they usually sell out quickly.

Blues cruise

Continuing in his father's footsteps, John Lee Hooker Jr. takes that pioneering blues sound and incorporates elements of R&B, soul and jazz. He's back in Alaska for another string of shows at Blues Central, 9 p.m. Wednesday through Dec. 8. Tickets are $25. Call 272-1341, and look for a feature in next week's issue of Play.

Indie 500

Housed in the space that was formerly The Downstairs, The Fiesta Room is filling the void of underage venues left when the previous tenants closed shop. So far most of the shows there have mostly been of the metal variety, but Friday's show is the Indie Showcase, featuring Turquoise Boy, Young Fangs, Pros & Cons, Starship Amazing and Pretty Birds That Kill, 8 p.m., $10. Visit facebook.com/fiesta.room for info.

Holiday spirits

Pump Up the Kids is a charity run by radio station KZND that provides presents for teenagers in foster care, and for a second year the 12 Days of Christmas Pub Crawl is raising funds. Whale's Tail, Platinum Jaxx, Pioneer Bar, Anchor Pub, Gaslight, Slippery Salmon, Darwin's, Humpy's, McGinley's, Sub-Zero, Brown Bag and Avenue Bar each represent a different day of Christmas, and a stamp from each registers you for a chance to win 50,000 Alaska Airlines Miles, 8 p.m. Saturday.
