Driver badly hurt in collision with moose on Parks Highway

An Anchorage man suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning when the car he was driving struck a moose on the Parks Highway near Houston, Alaska State Troopers said.

Tanner Heisler, 19, was behind the wheel of a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu about 9:50 a.m. when a moose stepped into his lane of travel at Mile 59 of the Parks Highway, troopers said in a written statement posted online. The car slammed into the moose, badly hurting Heisler, an Anchorage resident, troopers said.

A helicopter flew the wounded man to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, troopers said.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the moose was hit at least once more by another vehicle or vehicles and died at the scene of the wreck.
