Letter: US leaves many women in peril

Concerning the Dec. 5 article on the increasingly brutal attacks on Afghan women for just existing. I fear too few people even noticed the article.

We spent how many billions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for what? How sad it is that women had more rights, freedoms and safety, under the dictator Saddam Hussein. In these Middle Eastern countries, women are not treated as second-class citizens or even servants but as livestock that you can beat, sell, kill, for it is your property.

Is this the legacy we leave for having established "democracy"? I fear and pray for all women in these countries as the U.S. withdraws.
