Defending champs ousted in state tournament

The Class 2A and Mixed 6 state volleyball championships will crown new champions Saturday at Dimond High, after the defending champions in each tournament lost semifinal matches Friday.

Dillingham knocked off defending champion Klawock in the Class 2A tournament and will face Craig, which defeated Kenny Lake -- last season's runner up -- in Friday's other 2A semifinal.

Unalakleet, seeking its first state title, will face Noatak in Saturday's Mixed 6 final. Unalakleet swept defending champion Glacier View on Friday, and Noatak beat Elim in four sets to earn its second straight trip to the title match.

Friday's best match was the last, with Dillingham and Klawock producing the tournament's first five-setter. The teams alternated wins in the first four sets, with Dillingham taking the first and Klawock winning the fourth to even it at two sets apiece. The final set to 15 was tied at 10-10 before the Wolverines closed on a 5-1 run.

Though new to the Class 2A tournament this season, Dillingham is no stranger to state competition. The Wolverines played in the Class 3A tournament the last three seasons, finishing third in the last two. Klawock won two of the last three Class 2A titles.
