Two people died in a collision Friday on the Seward Highway near Summit Lake, north of the highway's junction with the Sterling Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The three-vehicle collision was reported about 4:40 p.m. near Mile 49 Seward Highway, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said. A pickup and a Chevrolet Blazer were traveling in opposite directions and hit head-on, according to a witness in a GMC Yukon SUV that slammed into the back of the Blazer, Peters said.
Two people were ejected from the pickup -- the make and model were unclear late Friday -- and died at the scene of the collision, Peters said. Another person was trapped in the Blazer, which careened off the roadway, she said.
As of 6 p.m., firefighters were still working to free the person in the Blazer, Peters said.
The extent of any injuries among the survivors was unknown, Peters said. The names of those involved have not been released.
Troopers expected the highway to be closed past midnight, Peters said.
"Traffic will be routed through when possible," Peters said in an email. "The cause and circumstances of this incident are under investigation."
