A forgettable first half gave way to a high-powered second half for the UAA women's basketball team Tuesday, and the Seawolves remained undefeated in the the AT&T Hoops Classic with a 82-40 win over Eastern New Mexico.

UAA's Alysa Horn and Jenna Buchanan both flirted with double-doubles and sparked an impressive second-half defensive effort that held Eastern New Mexico to just 14 points after the break.

UAA (6-2) made 11 of its 14 steals in the second half, after being noticeably outhustled by the Zias in the first 20 minutes at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

"We should have come out a lot more focused, but it was good that we could regroup, adapt, and that's just one part of growing as a group," said Horn, who led the Seawolves with 16 points. "I see individuals growing every day, I see us growing as a group every day and we're making a lot of mistakes, but that's all about the process."

Horn, a senior, was one rebound shy of a double-double and her five blocks were a career high. Buchanan pumped in 14 of her 15 points in the second half, hauled in seven rebounds and made all of her game-high five steals after the break.

"A lot of her points actually came off of steals,' UAA coach Ryan McCarthy said. "She's one of those players that can finish really good around the basket, so when she gets a steal and gets out with numbers, she does a pretty good job."

Buchanan is a freshman, but doesn't look it. Her calm and confidence on the floor are evident and she plays with maturity.

"She's a coach's kid, so I think she understands basketball," McCarthy said. "I think the game's a little slower for her than for most freshmen, so she was one of the players that kinda came in and was game ready."

Fortune favored Eastern New Mexico (0-10) in the late stages of the first half, when foul calls and bounces were going the Zias' way. Just when it looked like they might only be down five going into halftime, UAA's Alyssa Hutchins (five points) banked in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key to put UAA up 34-26. Midway through the second half, UAA's lead swelled to more than 20.

The round-robin format means the tournament title will be on the line when UAA faces the tournament's only other undefeated team in Cal State-Los Angeles in Wednesday's finale at 7 p.m.

The Golden Eagles earned their second tournament win against BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday, and the showdown with the Seawolves will be a rematch of last season's NCAA West Regional Championships first-round match up, which the Seawolves won 65-56.

The Golden Eagles have a talented point guard in Tessondra Williams, who led the team in scoring for the first two wins, but McCarthy said she isn't the only one the Seawolves will find difficult to contain.

"They're a team that's pretty deep, so it'll be an interesting match up, because they're a big athletic team and we're short and fast,'' McCarthy said.

Eagles win again

Williams scored more than 20 points for the second straight day, leading Cal State Los Angeles to its second straight Classic victory, a 77-56 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Williams led all scorers with 22 points, and Richelle Najera generated a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (7-3) of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Shayla Washington's second straight double-double paced Brigham Young-Hawaii (1-5) of the Pacific West Conference. The forward finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
