Hot picks: Holiday lights, dance parties and doomsday

Home for the holidays

Indie-rock band The Hoons got its start in Anchorage, but the group's been based in Portland, Ore., so Saturday's show at Koot's will serve as a homecoming. In the meantime, visit thehoons.com to download new song "Gaslight" for free. The show starts 9 p.m. with Turquoise Boy and Kill Tango, and you can catch the Hoons again at the same time and place Dec. 28 with Eternal Cowboys and Gimmee Gimmee Gimmee.

Light up the night

Doomsday preppers

With all the hubbub about Dec. 21, 2012, and its place on the Mayan calendar, there's no shortage of apocalyptic themed events around town Friday. There's At World's End, a massive electronic music dance party at Dena'ina Center, featuring headliners Jimni Cricket, Down Jones, Chris the Junglist, DJ Ghost and Ian K, 8 p.m, $25-$35. Koot's is hosting the Thunderdome Post-Apocalyptic Party, with music by Thee Homicidal Supermodels and DJs Cross, Adam J and Gre, 11 p.m. (21 and older). At Avenue Bar, there's the Zombie Apocalypse party with metal bands Machinecorpse, Decepticide, City in Ashes and Glass Halo, 8 p.m., free (21 and older). Then there's the End of Days Fun Run, a half marathon and 5K run, starting 10 a.m. at UAA's Professional Studies Building. Register online at aeclueuaa.com, $25-$30.
