Wind, snow coming to Southcentral for Christmas

Driving conditions are expected to be difficult today through week's end along Turnagain Arm and the Kenai Peninsula as a storm blows wind and snow into Southcentral.

Anchorage should see 1 to 3 inches of snow through Christmas, with the highest amounts, coupled with wind up to 50 mph, along the Hillside and Turnagain Arm, according to the National Weather Service. Western Prince William Sound, including Girdwood and the Portage Valley, is expected to get wind up to 60 mph today and 16 to 36 inches of snow by midweek. On the Kenai Peninsula to the south, 8 to 12 inches of snow is in the forecast for the storm, with localized gusts of 40 mph wind possible, the weather service said.

The storm was already wreaking havoc Monday along the Seward Highway south of Anchorage, dropping rain and snow near Portage, weather service forecaster Dan Peterson said. The storm could cause visibility and traction problems for motorists heading south for the holiday, Peterson said.

"It's going to be horrible through there and Turnagain Arm," Peterson said. "With the rain, that's not going to be real good on the roads. And the wind, that's not going to help either."
