Parke, Christianson sweep slaloms

Anchorage skiers Juliette Parke, who races for Utah's Rowmark Academy, and Kieffer Christianson, who juggles his time between the U.S. Ski Team and Dartmouth College, each won a pair of slaloms Saturday at the Coca-Cola Holiday Classic at Alyeska.

Parke, 14, and Christianson, 20, decisively won both runs in both races.

Parke won the first slalom by a landslide, finshing more than four seconds ahead of anyone else. She won the second slalom by more than 2.5 seconds.

A clutch of three women, separated in both races by less than one second, traded places behind Parke. Rowmark teammate Aspen Sulte was second in the first race and fourth in the second race, Sarah Lundgren of Alyeska Ski Club was third in the first race and second in the second race and Sarah Powell of ASC placed fourth in the first race and third in the second race.

The men also traded places on the podium. Kiefer Davis, with a terrific first run, finished second in the first race but blew out in the first run of the second race. Third in the first race was Nicholas Crews, who then grabbed second place in the second race.

Christianson, only 1.5 seconds ahead of Davis after the first run of the day, turned up the gas, winning the second run by two seconds, and the second race by almost six seconds. Tim Thornley, fourth in the first race, claimed third place in the second.

Crews showed the greatest progression in responding to Christianson's obvious speed: he reduced his time deficit on each run and had his best relative performance in his last run of the day, finishing that run only 2.43 seconds behind Christianson.
