2013 Fur Rondezvous pin released

Craig MedredAlaska Dispatch

It's not February yet, but you can already order your official 2013 Fur Rondezvous collector's items, including pins, buttons, charms, ornaments and more.

This year's design features a yellow-eyed snowy owl against a blue back ground hovering over a brown "Fur Rendezvous" banner.

John McCleary, president of greater Anchorage, Inc. Board of Directors, told Alaska Business Monthly, “There’s no better bird so well adapted to life in the Arctic than the snowy owl. A perfect fit for Fur Rondy, the premier winter festival in the nation!”

The design was created by local artist and retired engineer, Harlan Legare. Legare has designed two Fur Rondy parade floats and three Fur Rondy pins previous to this one. He told Alaska Business Monthly, “I chose the Snowy Owl for my design in part because their majestic appearance in flight is a sight to behold; they well represent the mystique of the arctic.”

Fur Rondy is a 10-day festival that takes place in downtown Anchorage, Alaska in late February. It began in 1935 as a celebration of the difficult Alaskan winters. The first Fur Rondy pins were used as entrance tickets to the festival and the tradition and practice of collecting the pins has been commonplace ever since.
