Delays expected on Seward Highway, near Girdwood

Drivers headed for the Girdwood and Portage area this morning should expect delays of up to 45 minutes on the Seward Highway. The delays are expected to end about 11 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

The state planned to close the road between miles 85 and 88 of the highway in order to conduct avalanche prevention work. Find updates on road closures and conditions at the Transportation Department website:

The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center warned that backcountry travel in the Turnagain Arm area is dangerous, with "considerable" threat of avalanches above and below the tree line.

"Over the past eight days we tripled the snowpack on the ground, placing a tremendous stress on a persistent weak layer," the center reported. "Avalanche conditions can be found across a wide region today, meaning that steep slopes should still be avoided."
