Empty suitcase on JBER prompts police response

A suitcase left outside the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Shopette, a convenience store, prompted base officials to cordon off the area for a short time Wednesday, according to JBER's Public Affairs department.

What was first reported as a "suspicious package" at the Military Mall, the base's main shopping center, turned out to be an empty suitcase at the Shopette, a nearby store, said JBER spokesman John Pennell. The suitcase did not appear to belong to anyone nearby, Pennell said.

"It was an empty suitcase, but it’s one of those situations where you find a package, and there’s certain safety precautions we have to take," Pennell said.

The report about 11:45 a.m. caused base officials to cordon off the area, close two roads and stop traffic coming onto base at the Muldoon Road entrance, Pennell said. Military police, base security and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit responded, he said.

The closures ended a little after 1 p.m., Pennell said.
