Flute salute
Flutissimo, a flute quartet featuring Janet Gellert, Laura Koenig, Sharon Nowak and Margaret Turner, will present a concert in honor of Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau, a contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert. The program will be capped by one of the most ambitious works for flute ensemble, his "epic" Grand Quartet in E Minor. The musicians will also perform a work in memory of Kuhlau by contemporary American composer Harvey Sollberger. Donations are requested at the door, $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. The pipes will start calling at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at Wilda Marston Theater in Loussac Library.
Regency revels
Comedy, heartbreak and romance -- lots of it -- fill Valley Performing Arts' production of "Sense and Sensibility." Set in 1811, Jane Austen's evergreen tale brings to life the hopes and agonies of England's minor gentry. War story
Audie Murphy, an orphaned son of Texas sharecroppers, won more medals than any other American soldier in World War II, including the Medal of Honor shown here, and went on to a limited but interesting career in Hollywood. Most of his roles were in westerns, but he also starred in his own autobiographical film about the war, "To Hell and Back." The film will be screened at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Alaska Veterans Museum, 333 W. Fourth Ave., Suite 227. Admission is $3, which includes gourmet popcorn and beverages. Check out the museum's new exhibits while you're there.
