Boys prep hockey

South 3, West Valley 0

Goals from Cameron Kouth 3, West Valllatt, Payton McSharry and Cayden Cahill carried South to a 3-0 shutout of West Valley in a nonconference boys hockey game Friday in Fairbanks.

Ben Simpson stopped 10 shots for the victory. Matt Taylor totaled 23 saves for the Wolfpack.


Girls prep hockey

Arctic Bears romp

Zahn Thompson and Dynnea Bezona each scoreed a pair of goals and Molly Brooks stopped nine shots Friday to propel the Fairbanks Arctic Bears past South-Bartlett 9-1 in a girls hockey game in Fairbanks.

Morgan Newhouse supplied South-Bartlett's only goal, which briefly tied the score in the first period. Zoe Scherer made 27 saves for the Anchorage team.


UAA skiing

Adde makes top 10

UAA alpine skier Andreas Adde turned in a team-high ninth-place finish Friday in an NCAA giant slalom race in Winter Park, Colo.

Adde, a senior All-American, was one of four Seawolves to make the top 15 on the final day of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association alpine qualifier. He posted a two-run total time of 2 minutes, 9.87 seconds in the men's race.

UAA sophomore Niko Harmanen wasn't far behind, finishing 11th at 2:10.01.

Kayla Hoog-Fry and Anna Berecz were in the top 15 for the UAA women, with Hoog-Fry, a senior, taking 12th in 2:10.29 and Berecz, a sophomore, finishing 13th in 2:10.88.

Utah's Andy Trow won the men's race with 2:08.01, and Denver's Kristine Haugen won the women's race in 2:05.54.

UAA's alpine skiers are back in action Saturday for the first day of the Denver Invitational, while the nordic team opens its season Saturday with a freestyle race in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Mount. St. Elias Classic

Klawock handed tournament host Yakutat a pair of losses Friday in the Mount St. Elias Classic basketball tournament, with the boys beating Yakutat 79-68 and the girls rolling to a 53-16 victory.

Tyrus Morgan poured in 31 points for the Klawock boys, who got another 14 points from Josh Marvin-Looney and 11 from Sam Rew. Billy Brown dropped in a team-high 23 points and Kalen Klushkan added 12 for Yakutat.

Cassi Williams scored 20 points and Tonya Busse tallied 16 to lead the Klawock girls.

In other games Friday, the Cordova boys took a 48-39 win over Cook Inlet Academy, and the CIA girls grabbed a 33-22 win over Cordova.

Jacob Werner's 16 points helped propel the Cordova boys, and Timmy Smithwick powered CIA with 18 points.

The CIA girls got 15 points from Nicole Moffis.
