Alaska sports digest for Jan.14

Neither wind nor rain nor mud nor lack of snow managed to stop the Hickok Pursuit cross country ski race Sunday at Kincaid Park.

Jack Novak and Laura Gardner took home victories in the race, which because of conditions was modified to feature just freestyle skiing rather than one leg of freestyle skiing and one leg of classic skiing.

Bjornsen 7th in team sprint

Sadie Bjornsen of Anchorage teamed up with Ida Sargent of Orleans, Vt., to claim seventh place Sunday in a World Cup team sprint race in Liberac, Czech Republic.

Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg and Maiken Caspersen Falla won the freestyle race, with teams from Sweden placing second and third.

The result came one year after Bjornsen and Sargent placed 14th in a team sprint in Milan, Italy.

"This year we were able to ski in the mix and spend a large portion of time in the front of the pack," Bjornsen said in a U.S. Ski Team press release. "Ninty-five percent of the time we were skiing around third or fourth place, so it was a huge day."

Bjornsen and Sargent were the only Americans in the race; Anchorage's Kikkan Randall took the week off to recover from the Tour de Ski. Holly Brooks of Anchorage also took the day off.
