Police: Driver shoots passenger's hand, steals her purse

A 25-year-old driver shot a woman in the hand while stealing her purse Tuesday afternoon in Fairview, according to Anchorage police.

Police say Alejandro Aulman offered the 37-year-old victim a ride shortly before 4:30 p.m. Aulman demanded the passenger hand over her purse, striking her in the face and shooting her with a handgun, police said.

The woman escaped in the area of 10th Avenue and Latouche Street, not far from where Aulman picked her up, police said in a statement to reporters. Police found Aulman outside his home, near the 1200 block of Nelchina Street, just east of Latouche.

His vehicle was parked nearby, the statement said.

Police found evidence of the robbery in Aulman's home. He was arrested on a prior warrant for violation probation on a second-degree robbery conviction. He faces charges of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery in the Tuesday purse-snatching and shooting, police said.

Aulman was being held without bail Wednesday at that Anchorage jail.
