Seems like Scott Gomez's travels with the San Jose Sharks on their two-game, season-opening road trip to Canada makes his signing a sure thing, so The Blog is pegging Wednesday as the day it gets announced.
The veteran NHL center from Anchorage has been practicing with the Sharks for several days, and San Jose can get him on the cheap for one season well under a $1 million.
Money is not an issue. Including this season's pro-rated buyout of his contract by Montreal, by our count Gomez, 33, has already earned $56.4 million in the NHL. He's also due another $3 million from Montreal in the next two seasons.
TSN and the San Jose Mercury News have reported the signing is imminent -- TSN reported it would happen today, but doesn't look that way. Best bet is Wednesday, when the Sharks are back in California ahead of Thursday's home opener.
The Sharks will have to clear a roster spot for Gomez, either by putting someone on injured reserve or shipping someone to the minors.
In any event, we do have one piece of Gomez news that's not out there on the series of tubes -- he had lunch in Edmonton today with Jack Michaels, the former Alaska Aces radio broadcaster and jack of all trades who is now the Oilers' radio voice. The Sharks and Oilers play tonight. Remember, Gomez played for the Aces during the 2004-05 lockout, when he was the ECHL MVP and Jack was working for the Aces, so they know each other well.
