Former Nanook goaltender Johnson promoted to NHL Phoenix

Well, Scott Gomez did not dress for the San Jose Sharks tonight -- guessing he'll make his debut for them Saturday -- but there is an Alaska connection dressed in the game for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Former UAF goaltender Chad Johnson was recalled by Phoenix from AHL Norfolk because Mike Smith is out with a minor lower-body injury, and Johnson is serving as the Coyotes' back-up tonight.

Johnson has six games of NHL experience, all with the New York Rangers. He's 1-2-1 in the NHL, with a 2.59 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.

For Norfolk this season, Johnson is 14-8-0 with a 2.80 and .912.

Johnson may not be with Phoenix long, but, hey, nice bump in pay while he is there. According to, Johnson makes $105,000 in the A, $600,000 in the NHL.
