UAA women win at Western Oregon

Though short in numbers, the UAA women's basketball team landed four players in double figures Thursday to turn back Western Oregon 63-54 in Monmouth, Ore.

Six players logged 194 of a possible 200 minutes for the Seawolves, who dressed eight players, two of them walk-ons. Injuries, departures and academic issues have left the team short-handed since the holiday break.

Alli Madison posted a double-double and Alysa Horn came close for UAA (9-7 overall, 3-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Madison, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and hit 6 of 10 shots on her way to 15 points and her first career double-double. Horn, a 6-0 senior, hit 8 of 14 shots for a game-high 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

The win allowed UAA to continue its mastery of Western Oregon, which lost to the Seawolves for the 18th straight time. It was the eighth loss in nine games for the Wolves (6-12, 1-7).

Kylie Burns and Jenna Buchanan also hit double figures for the Seawolves. Burns scored 13 points, all in the second half as UAA protected a 31-26 halftime lead, and Buchanan chipped in 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Madison, Horn and Buchanan all shot better than 50 percent.

The game was tied 13-13 before Horn, Buchanan and Madison put the Seawolves ahead with consecutive layups.

UAA fended off the Wolves throughout the second half. Burns, a 5-9 junior forward, shot 5 of 11 after the break and drained pair of 3-pointers to help UAA repel each Western Oregon charge. The Seawolves extended their lead to as many as 14 points on three occasions.

Melissa Fowler led Western Oregon with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Seawolves head to Lacey, Wash., for a Saturday game against Saint Martin's.
