College and minor-league pro notes (Stephon Williams leads our roundup)

Minnesota State-Mankato freshman goaltender Stephon Williams of Fairbanks, coming off a shutout of UAA in Anchorage last weekend, performed splendidly in hostile Gophers territory tonight -- he stopped 37 shots to lift the No. 14-ranked Mavericks to a 2-1 win at No. 1-ranked Minnesota.

The Mavericks won on Brett Knowles' goal with just 44 seconds left -- the second assist on that strike was furnished by center Eli Zuck of Anchorage. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 10,076 at Mariucci Arena. The series moves to Mankato on Saturday night.

Elsewhere in college pucks, Michigan State true sophomore Tanner Sorenson of Anchorage racked two goals in a 5-3 win over Penn State. Casey Bailey of Anchorage and former Seawolves skater Justin Kirchhevel each furnished one assist for the Nittany Lions.

In women's play, Minnesota-Duluth's Zoe Hickel of Anchorage scored the game-winning strike midway through the third period and also delivered two helpers in a 7-5 win at Ohio State. With 9-10--19 totals in 22 games, Hickel is tied for the team lead in both goals and points.

On the pro minor league front, former Alaska Aces winger Scott Howes scored for the second straight game for AHL Springfield, which fell 3-1 to visiting Worcester, which got a short-handed goal from former UAA winger Tommy Grant. The goal was Grant's 10th of the season and gives him 10-9--19 totals in 37 games after going 11-12--23 in 72 games as a rookie last season.

Erstwhile Aces defenseman Kane Lafranchise absorbed a -3 rating for AHL Oklahoma City in an 8-2 loss at Milwaukee -- he's -10 in nine games with the Barons.
