UAA hockey team falls to No. 20 Wisconsin

Doyle Woody

Putting up the good fight did UAA little good Saturday night.

The Seawolves outshot Wisconsin 22-19. They played with discipline, permitting the Badgers one power play. And they scored a rare power-play strike of their own.

And yet they lost again, falling 2-1 to the 20th-ranked Badgers at the Kohl Center in Madison and driving their winless streak to 12 games (0-11-1), which ties for the fourth-longest such drought in program history.

Wisconsin, meanwhile, stretched its Western Collegiate Hockey Association unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3), swept the four-game season series with UAA and moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the 12-team league. Two points separate fourth place from eighth place.

UAA (3-16-4, 1-15-4 WCHA) remained deep in the league basement, six points removed from 11th place. The Seawolves have not won since a 3-1 victory over visiting St. Cloud State on Dec. 1.

For the eighth time in the last 12 games, the Seawolves were limited to one goal or less.

Saturday night's goal came from junior winger Jordan Kwas, who deflected Quinn Sproule's power-play shot with one minute left in the second period to cut Wisconsin's lead to 2-1.

That was the eighth power-play goal in 24 games for the Seawolves, and four of those have come from Kwas.

Wisconsin (11-8-5, 8-5-5 WCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Tyler Barnes and Jefferson Dahl scored 3:09 apart inside the opening five minutes of the second period.

Barnes scored off a back-door feed from Dahl and Dahl redirected Frankie Simonelli's shot.

Wisconsin's Landon Peterson stopped 21 shots and UAA's Chris Kamal made 17 saves.

The Seawolves return home to entertain ninth-place Colorado College on Friday and Saturday nights at Sullivan Arena.

Seawolves notes

Wisconsin has beaten UAA in 15 straight games in Madison.

UAA fell to 0-8-2 in WCHA road games.

Kwas racked a three-point weekend. He furnished two assists in Friday's 5-2 loss.
