UAA men top Simon Fraser

The UAA men's basketball team got back to its winning ways Saturday against Simon Fraser.

Liam Gibcus and Kyle Fossman each finished with 16 points and the Seawolves capped a two-game road trip with an 86-66 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win in Burnaby, British Columbia.

UAA (12-5, 5-4 GNAC) has won four of its last five games, with the loss coming Thursday against an undefeated Western Washington squad that is the NCAA Division II defending national champion and is currently ranked second in the nation.

Saturday's win, which moves UAA into a tie for third place in the GNAC, was the eighth straight against Simon Fraser.

The Seawolves benefited from 13 points apiece from Teancum Stafford, who hit 5 of 9 field-goal attempts and matched Gibcus with a game-high seven rebounds, and Colton Lauwers.

UAA dominated the boards with a 31-18 advantage and committed eight turnovers to Simon Fraser's 14.

Simon Fraser led by 12 points from Elijah Matthews, kept pace with the Seawolves' shooting. Both teams shot 53 percent, but UAA attempted 11 more shots and made nine more free throws.

UAA trailed 25-18 midway through the first half but took command with a 14-0 run that gave the Seawolves a 32-25 lead. They closed the half strong, capping it with a Lauwers 3-pointer for a 10-point halftime lead.

UAA continued to stretch the lead throughout the second half, pushing the advantage to 69-49 when Fossman drilled a trey with 9:24 to play. The Seawolves' largest lead was 22 and it wasn't all built with jump shots. UAA outscored Simon Fraser 32-18 in the paint.

The Seawolves return home this week for games against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.
