Redington edges Petit in Northern Lights 300

Ray Redington Jr. of Wasilla edged Girdwood's Nicolas Petit by four minutes shortly after midnight Sunday to capture the championship of the Northern Lights 300 sleddog race.

Redington and his team of 11 dogs reached the Big Lake finish line at 12:37 a.m. Sunday.

Petit, who led the 300-mile race at the halfway point, arrived with a team of 12 dogs at 12:41 a.m.

In third place with 16 dogs was Willow musher DeeDee Jonrowe, who reached the finish line at Martin Buser's Happy Trails Kennel at 1:45 a.m.

Redington's win was particularly impressive because a week earlier he ran the grueling 300-mile Kuskokwim 300 in Bethel, finishing 14th.
