Bethel man accused of scaring hotel employees with shotgun

A 24-year-old man has been charged with assault after police say he walked into a popular Bethel hotel carrying a shotgun and scared employees.

Thomas J. Amik, of Bethel, is accused of entering the Long House Alaskan Hotel with the firearm at 7:59 p.m. Saturday, frightening workers who locked themselves in the bathroom and dialed 911, according to a police statement to reporters.

Amik left the hotel and walked a short distance to 3rd Avenue and Main Street where police blocked off the area. Officers negotiated with Amik and arrested him peacefully, according to the department.

Amik is charged with felony weapons misconduct and two counts of third-degree assault, police said.

Police chief Larry Elarton could not be reached for comment late Monday afternoon.
