The Bartlett hockey team's season came to a quick and painful end Monday in the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference tournament. East's came to a slow, heartbreaking conclusion.

The West Eagles beat East 5-4 in double overtime at the McDonald Center to earn a trip to the state hockey tournament and send the Thunderbirds home for the season.

At Ben Boeke, South pelted Bartlett with 52 shots and prompted a hasty end to things by forcing a running clock in the third period of a 13-0 triumph that sends the Wolverines to the state tournament.

Alex Bardsley scored 1 minute and 45 seconds into the second overtime period to complete a hat trick. Paul Norris scored the other two goals for the Eagles, who were outshot 7-2 in the two overtimes.

Max Osgood and Garen Teders assisted on the game-winning goal. It was Osgood's third assist of the night.

Steven Butts scored twice for East in the second period. In the third period, Jack Reynold's goal for East tied the game 3-3 and Sam Stinson's goal put the Thunderbirds in the lead with 6:11 left in regulation.

The game featured a scoreless first period, a five-goal second period and a third period in which East scored two in a row to lead briefly before Norris forced overtime by scoring with 4:39 to play.

West goaltender Joe Chekan turned back 36 shots, including three in the second overtime. Kris Oldham made 17 saves for East.

In their loss to South, the Golden Bears managed eight shots on goal -- one fewer than the number of goals South scored in the second period.

With the win, South clinched a berth in the state hockey tournament while moving into a Thursday semifinal game.

Added to two goals in the first period, the Wolverines' nine-goal second game brought on the mercy rule, which takes the form of a running clock.

Cayden Cahill scored a hat trick and Josh Smith and Steven Orizotti tallied two goals apiece for the Wolverines, who scored twice on the power play and once while shorthanded.

Also scoring were Gavin Lubin, Jonathan Weston, Jared Cruz, Cameron Klatt, Kory Cain and Brendan Jester. Nathan Wright made eight saves for the shutout.

South was relentless in the second period, generating 24 shots on goal during the 15-minute span.
