Dimond, Service win in opening round of CIC tournament

Dimond and Service are still alive in their quest for a Cook Inlet Conference boys hockey title, each earning first-round tournament victories Tuesday.

Dimond pummeled Chugiak 14-0 at Ben Boeke Arena and Service came from behind to knock off Eagle River 4-2 at the McDonald Center.

Service and Eagle River played through a scoreless first period and Eagle River took a 2-0 lead on goals from Carter Jesiel and Quinn Hulse less than four minutes into the second period.

The Cougars, who outshot Eagle River 28-17, rattled off four unanswered goals from four different players. Brad Kuper, Karson Frisk and Miles Giorgione all scored before the second period ended, Giorgione striking 51 seconds prior to the second intermission to put the Cougars up 3-2.

Service clung to its one-goal lead until Andrew Cummings provided an insurance goal with 3:56 left to play.

Dimond's win included nine first-period goals and a hat trick from Josh Larson, who scored the game's third and fourth goals 27 seconds apart. Both of Larson's first-period goals came on assists from Drake Glover in the fifth minute, which hadn't yet concluded when Brandon Sakumoto struck to put Dimond up 5-0 with 10:06 remaining before the first intermission.

Dimond outshot Chugiak 41-5, with goalie Jordan MacMillan earning the shutout.
