A two-vehicle crash on the Seward Highway south of Anchorage Thursday evening left one person dead and sent three others to the hospital, Alaska State Troopers said.
The initial investigation found that a Subaru was heading south on the Seward Highway when the driver began to pass another southbound vehicle around Mile 105, near Indian between Anchorage and Girdwood, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email.
The Subaru then crashed into a northbound Mercedes sedan carrying two adults, she said. The collision occurred in the northbound lane. A passenger in the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.
Medics took the other three adults to Anchorage for treatment of injuries that weren't believed to be life threatening, she said.
Troopers got a call about the wreck at 7:25 p.m. More than two hours later, the highway was still closed in both directions. Peters said she expected traffic would be affected into the night.
Troopers weren't releasing other information, including the identities of the people involved, Thursday night, she said.
