Late free throws doom UAA women

An upset bid by the UAA women's basketball team came up short Thursday night in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Simon Fraser, the 13th-ranked NCAA Division II team in the nation, outscored the Seawolves 8-0 in the final moments, getting all of those points at the foul line, to beat UAA 60-52 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.

UAA (10-8 overall, 4-6 GNAC) led by two at the half and traded leads with the Clan (15-3, 8-2) throughout the second half.

Jessica Madison's 3-pointer for UAA tied the game 52-52 with 1 minute, 55 seconds left. But that basket produced the final points of the game for the Seawolves, who committed six fouls and two turnovers and missed two shots the rest of the way.

Simon Fraser sank 8 of 10 free throws in the final stretch for the win.

The Clan got two great individual performances -- Erin Chambers hit all six of her free throws and 6 of 13 from the field for a game-high 20 points, and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe racked up 17 rebounds.

The Canadians rejected six UAA shots, with Rebecca Langmead blocking three.

UAA point guard Sasha King marked her return from a sprained ankle by scoring a team-high 14 points and handing out four assists. King, who had missed the previous four games, gave UAA its final lead when she knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 49-48 with three minutes to go, but she fouled out on Simon Fraser's ensuing posession.

Alysa Horn posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Kylie Burns contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Seawolves.

UAA wraps up a four-game road trip Saturday with a game against another nationally ranked opponent -- No. 5 Western Washington.
