It’s not every day that 6-foot Kyle Fossman comes within a rebound of a double-double.

The UAA men’s basketball team remained in third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference on Thursday thanks in part to a game-high 26 points from its leading scorer, but Fossman also led the Seawolves on the boards with nine rebounds in a 98-69 win over Central Washington.

“I think I got a few long ones,” said Fossman, a junior guard. “I wasn’t really battling down low. I probably got some rebounds that our bigs tipped out.”

Fossman wasn’t the only UAA player knocking down shots at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Teancum Stafford and Abebe Demissie each scored 18 points and the Seawolves shot an impressive 55.2 percent from the field to avenge an earlier loss to the Wildcats.

“We were able to spread the floor out and get shooters some open looks and when we can get our shooters open looks, most days they’re gonna make a high percentage of them,”  UAA coach Rusty Osborne said.

The win was the fifth in six games for UAA, which improved to 13-5 overall and 6-4 in the GNAC. Central fell to 11-7, 5-5.

The teams were tied for third place in the league standings coming into Thursday’s game. The Wildcats dropped down a spot but the Seawolves still don’t have sole possession of third place — they share it with UAF, which beat Northwest Nazarene 61-60 in Fairbanks on Thursday.

Central Washington’s Mark McLaughlin, who leads the GNAC in scoring and was averaging 23.7 points per game coming in, finished with a team-high 20 points. He was held to seven points in the first half as UAA built a 12-point lead.

Central Washington pulled within seven points early in the second half, but the UAA lead swelled to 59-46 on a Fossman jumper with more than 13 minutes remaining. The Seawolves held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

UAA’s strong play of late is partly due to the team’s improving health, Osborne said. Demissie, who added seven rebounds, missed most of December with a knee injury, and Stafford hurt his back the first day back from Christmas break.

“Tonight was really the first night it’s felt 100 percent,” Stafford said.

The Seawolves are also gaining confidence in numerous facets of their game, Stafford said. They are doing a lot of the little things better, like playing good team defense and making better passes on offense.

“Coach deserves a lot of credit for that,” Stafford said. “He’s making adjustments that this team needs.”

UAA, which lost 81-72 on the road to Central Washington earlier this season, will look to avenge another early season loss Saturday when it hosts Northwest Nazarene, which beat UAA 61-60 in Nampa, Idaho.

“They’re a good team,” Fossman said. “We just gotta be ready to match their energy and play well.”
