APD promises to be on the lookout for impaired drivers

The Anchorage Police Department has announced that officers “will be out in force throughout Super Bowl weekend, strictly enforcing impaired driving violations.”

The offence of Operating Under the Influence, or OUI, can carry a fine of up to $25,000 and the impoundment of the vehicle for a first-time offender. Police have focused on Super Bowl weekend as a time when a number of people may attempt to drive after drinking or using drugs at a party.

According to a press release, APD impounded 42 vehicles during Super Bowl weekend in 2010, 30 vehicles in 2011 and 27 in 2012. The total numbers of OUI-related impounds for those years was 2,188 in 2010, 2,157 in 2011 and 1,861 in 2012.
