UAF falls; Nate Thompson scores (plus, pro notes)

The No. 20-ranked UAF Nanooks carried a seven-game unbeaten streak, the nation's third-longest entering the night, into No. 4 Miami (Ohio) tonight, but lost 4-1 -- was way closer because Miami racked two empty-net goals in the final minute.

On the NHL front, Tampa Bay Lightning center and, still seems weird to type, former Alaska Aces, bagged his first goal of the season in a 8-3 torch-job of Winnipeg. Defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage had an assist and was +3 for the Lightning.

Another former Ace who went back to the NHL once the lockout ended, Joey Crabb, played sparingly (6:32 of ice) for the Washington Capitals in a 3-2 win over Philly. Caps center Jay Beagle, the former Seawolf, logged strong ice time (15:13).

At the AHL level, former Seawolves winger Kevin Clark had a goal, his fifth, and a helper for St. John's in a 4-2 win over Binghampton.

Also in the A, former Aces winger Tyler Ruegsegger bagged his fifth goal for Abbotsford in a 4-1 win at Lake Erie.

One ECHL note to pass along: South Carolina won 2-0 at Gwinnett on goals from Alaska connections -- former UAA defenseman Luka Vidmar authored the game-winning strike and Hunter Bishop of Fairbanks added the empty netter for his 20th goal of the season.
