School Board holds first hearing on budget that cuts 215 jobs

The Anchorage School Board will hear public testimony on the school budget for the 2013-2014 school year at a meeting that begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The meeting is at district headquarters at 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd.

This is the first of two public hearings on the district's budget. A final hearing and vote are scheduled for Feb. 21.

The budget proposed by Superintendent Jim Browder calls for eliminating 215 jobs, including 100 positions that were vacated earlier in the current school year. With more attrition expected, actual layoffs may be around 50 people, Browder said.

The district has a shortfall of about $25 million, he has said.

Next year's proposed budget is $720 million, not counting a liability payment for retirement programs for district employees. The state pays the retirement fund obligation.

People may sign up to testify until 5:30 p.m. Monday by calling 742-4315, faxing 742-4318, or emailing schoolboard@asdk12.org.

They can also sign up at the meeting room before the meeting begins.
