Letter: Cats kill tiny percentage of birds

On Jan. 30 we learned that cats kill 2.5 billion birds and five times that number of tiny mammals. But the article failed to state what percentage of bird and mammal populations these numbers represent.

Allow me to weigh in. On page 4 of “Feathers” (Basic Books), Thor Hanson states that there are 400 billion birds in the world. So a bit more than one half of 1 percent of birds are killed by cats.

Anyone know the tiny mammal count?
