Alaska sports report for Feb. 6

The UAA women's basketball team returns home for a pair of games this week, just as another player will return to the roster.

Last week it was senior point guard Sasha King rejoining the team after an ankle injury kept her out four weeks. This week, senior guard Jordan Martin will end a six-game hiatus due to an academic issue and help the Seawolves entertain Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings.

The UAA men, fresh off two home victories last week, will carry a three-game, road winning streak at Saint Martin's and Western Oregon.

Martin will be a welcome addition to a women's team that has gone into battle with as few as six active players in recent weeks. She averaged more than 21 minutes in 13 games and led the team in 3-point and field-goal percentages, making 58.8 percent from long range and 57.4 overall.

King, who leads the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in steals per game with 2.9, scored 30 points in two road losses last week. The Seawolves (10-9, 4-7 GNAC) went 2-2 on the four-game road trip.

They will try to get back on track against Seattle Pacific (12-7, 6-5) Thursday. UAA beat the Falcons 77-72 on the road last month and are 14-13 all-time against them in Anchorage. Katie Benson leads Seattle Pacific, averaging 14.9 points and eight rebounds per game.

Montana State-Billings (14-5, 8-3), which visits UAA on Saturday, is third in the GNAC. Bobbi Knudson averages more than 17 points for the Yellowjackets, who beat UAA 78-64 in Billings last month.

Fossman honored

The 3-pointers were falling last week for UAA junior Kyle Fossman, who was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Red Lion co-Player of the Week for men's basketball.

Fossman drained 7 of 13 treys in two UAA home victories last week, finishing the week with 41 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals. The 6-foot guard was 14 of 28 combined from the floor in a 98-69 win over Central Washington and a 73-72 win over Northwest Nazarene.

Fossman currently ranks 37th in GNAC history in 3-pointers made with 134. He is sixth in 3-point percentage at 46 percent.

The Player of the Week award was the first of Fossman's career. He shared it with Western Washington's Austin Bragg.
