Back in August, Play Magazine set out on a search for the spiciest dish in Anchorage. We awarded the distinction to the Super Nova wings at Hood Wings, with the caveat that the Atomic Chicken Bites that were available as a special at Moose's Tooth were the spiciest thing we tried during that time.
Among the other dishes I sampled, most of which were recommended by readers on Facebook and Twitter, there was plenty of Thai food, some Indian food and lots of chicken wings. Sushi wasn't really on our radar.
That's changed with Dish Sushi Bar's upcoming Inferno Challenge. The spicy sushi eating contest takes place noon Saturday, March 2. Registration is open now at dishsushibar.com, which requires submitting a waiver form with a $20 entry fee.
The waiver form states that the competition will consists of multiple rounds, the number of which will be determined by the number of entries, with the heat kicked up a notch in each level. Contestants will have 3-5 minutes to eat all the sushi on the plate in each round as fast as possible. Read the full breakdown of the rules and requirements on the registration form over here.
Every contestant will receive an "I Love Dish" t-shirt, while the grand prize winner will also leave with a $500 Dish gift card.
(Also from the registration form: "Winner and all participants agree to the use of their name, voice, likeness, and city/town/village for advertising or trade purposes and to cooperate reasonably in any effort to promote or publicize the Dish Sushi Bar and Japanese Restaurant and Dish Inferno Challenge." Elsewhere it says, "Contestants must have a nice clean appearance.")
I'm considering giving it a shot, but wasabi-spice intimidates me a bit more than, say, Thai-chili spice -- a totally different animal. Anyone else planning to take up the challenge? Let us know in the comments.
