Kansas to retire Chalmers jersey Saturday

Mario Chalmers is about to join elite company.

The Bartlett High graduate will be honored Saturday when the University of Kansas retires his basketball jersey.

Chalmers, whose dramatic 3-pointer famously helped the Jayhawks to victory in the 2008 national championship game, will become the 28th man to have his jersey retired by the school.

Chalmers' No. 15 will hang from the Allen Fieldhouse rafters alongside the jerseys of some of the game's greats -- among them, Wilt Chamberlain, Paul Pierce, Jo Jo White.

Chalmers became part of Jayhawks lore when he drained a 3-pointer with time running out in regulation to force overtime in the 2008 title game against Memphis. Kansas won in overtime.

A member of last year's Miami Heat NBA championship team and a two-time state champion at Bartlett in 2002 and 2003, Chalmers is one of only a handful of players who have won basketball championships in high school, NCAA Division I and the NBA.

His jersey will be retired during a halftime ceremony Saturday at the Texas-Kansas game, which airs on ESPN at 5 p.m. AST.
