Woods, Ramey win at CIC skiing championships

Friday was a good day for South skiers at Kincaid Park. Led by first-place finishes from Marion Woods and Tanner Ramey, the Wolverines placed three skiers in the top five of both the girls and boys races on the first day of the Cook Inlet Conference cross-country skiing championships.

Woods, who won the girls 7.5-kilometer classic race in 24 minutes, 25.1 seconds, is on pace to defend her CIC Skimeister title from last season. She won Friday's race by nearly 13 seconds over West's Lydia Blanchet (24:38.4). South's Teagan Yutrenka (25:48.7) was third, Service's Taryn Hunt-Smith (25:59.6) was fourth and South's Janey Hoefler (26:27.2) came in fifth.

The boys 10-K classic produced a similar finish to the girls race, with Ramey winning by 13 seconds. Ramey clocked 29:36.7 to outpace East's Thomas O'Harra at 29:49.7. South's Eric Backstrum and Seiji Takagi were next to cross the finish line, Backstrum in third at 30:10.6 and Takagi in fourth at 30:21. East's John Farr rounded out the top five at 30:30.
