Prior to UAA's soul-crushing 6-5 overtime defeat at the hands of No. 16-ranked Nebraska-Omaha tonight, UAA's annual 3 on 3 tournament was held at Sullivan Arena and defensemen rocked the event.
Your winners, 3-2 in a shootout no less, were the team of former UAA defenseman Matt Shasby, former UAA defenseman Todd Bethard, Todd's older brother Brian, a former Colorado College defenseman, and former UAA defenseman Eric Lawson, plus goaltender Owen Carlson of East High and the Alaska Junior Aces midget AAA club.
That group beat the team of Alaska Aces assistant coach Louis Mass (a former Bowling Green and Aces defenseman), former UAA forward Peter Cartwright, former UAA forward Jimmy Dahl, former UAF forward Billy Crumm and former UAA goalie Chris King. Gotta give Louis props -- he scored his team's two goals in the final. As Louis reported via text, when he scores both goals -- this is a guy who had two goals in college and never more than three in a pro season -- that's a problem.
Word around the rink was Todd Bethard authored the shootout winner.
Ran into Shasby in the parking lot on the way into the rink and he was wearing a yellow T-shirt given to the winners -- "Wearing it proudly,'' he said, before heading back inside to watch the UAA game.
As for the runners-up, not sure if they got any T-shirts.
"They get to wear sad faces,'' Shasby cracked.
He always was a quote machine.
