ASMI Supports Teen Culinary Stars in Alaska ProStart Invitational

Juneau, Alaska (Feb 21, 2013): Nine youth culinary arts teams from around the state will compete on February 23, 2013 in the 2013 Alaska State ProStart Invitational at University of Alaska Anchorage’s Lucy Cuddy Hall. The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is proud to sponsor this exciting competition and support the homegrown talent and hard work that these teens bring to the kitchen.

The teams will compete in two categories: management and culinary. Management teams must present a restaurant proposal, complete with menus, marketing plans, and more to a panel of local industry professionals, and demonstrate their knowledge of the hospitality industry by answering questions presented by the panel of judges.

The culinary teams will compete in an “Iron Chef” style competition, preparing a 3-course meal in only 60 minutes. Teams will be judged on their knife skills, portion sizes, presentation, and the taste of their final product.

“The ProStart program is such a unique opportunity for our Alaskan students,” said program coordinator Amber Zerbe. “Many of our competing students choose to further their education in hospitality industry and some even land jobs with their mentor chefs. For these students, ProStart isn’t just a fun class in high school, it is a life skill and the beginning of a potential career.”

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute considers ProStart Alaska to be an ideal way to foster Alaska’s culinary talent. “It’s important to support these budding culinary and management stars. Hopefully they will be building careers in the restaurant industry for years to come and can carry the message that Alaska seafood is the best in the world,” said Tyson Fick, ASMI communications director.

This action-packed event highlights the amazing youth who are learning the skills needed to succeed in Alaska’s vibrant culinary world. The competition will open to the public at 10 a.m. and run until about 5:30 p.m. Winners will travel to compete in the National ProStart Invitational on April 19-21, 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The ProStart® program, administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and Alaska CHARR, is a two-year curriculum designed to teach high school students the management skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Students also have the opportunity to participate in paid internships where industry managers mentor them.
