Assembly will meet Wednesday to hear speakers on labor law

Anchorage Assembly chairman Ernie Hall has scheduled an extra Assembly meeting next week to take public testimony on a proposed rewrite of city labor laws.

The meeting from 6 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at Loussac Library will be a continuation of the regular Assembly meeting that begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The highly controversial labor law proposed by Mayor Dan Sullivan would limit the power of city unions, put a cap on annual raises, and eliminate the right to strike or undergo binding arbitration.

The proposal is officially on Tuesday night's agenda to be opened for public hearing. But it is behind a lot of other Assembly business.

Hall said people wanting to speak on the labor law don't have to come and wait Tuesday, but can show up at 6 p.m. Wednesday instead. Speakers do not have to sign up.

He said if necessary, a couple more days may be set aside in early March to hear more testimony.
