Police name veteran officers who shot and killed man Tuesday

Anchorage police on Friday named two officers who shot and killed Carl Bowie III, 25, as he drove toward them in a stolen pickup the officers were trying to stop Tuesday, according to police.

The senior patrol officers are Roger Billiet and Alan Rydberg, according to a written statement from police. Billiet has been with the Anchorage Police Department for 13 years, and Rydberg for 11 years with the department, police said.

Bowie was driving at the officers at the corner of 53rd Avenue and Windflower Street when they fired seven shots, hitting him three times, police said. Bowie died, but a woman riding in the pickup's passenger seat was unharmed. Minutes before, Bowie refused to pull over for the officers and rammed patrol cars at one point, police said.

Police say further information about the circumstances of the shooting will be released when an Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals investigation is complete.
