Airliner scheduled to land at Merrill Field at about 2 p.m.

A Boeing 727 airliner is scheduled to land at Merrill Field, normally used only by small airplanes, Tuesday afternoon.

The air-shipping company FedEx is donating the jet to the University of Alaska Anchorage's Aviation Technology Center at the airport so students can use it for educational purposes, the university says.

After its short flight from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to Merrill Field, with a scheduled landing at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the plane will never be flown again, the university says. It first took to the air Feb. 14, 1979.

According to UAA, pilots of the plane may do up to two flyovers before landing.
