Wine of the week: 2010 Smith & Hook Cabernet Sauvignon

Smith & Hook Cabernet Sauvignon is named for two old horse and cattle ranches that switched focus to grapes in the '70s. Nicky and Gaby Hahn's investment in these Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards in California was practically visionary. Their 2010 cabernet is a heavy-shouldered fella. It packs lots of black fruit, both on the palate and in the nose. Fleshy, coating and nicely tannic, this wine strives to please and overachieve. It gives great delivery for half the price of Napa. Serve with grilled steaks, of course! Costs about $25.
