Alaska Railroad to lay off some workers

The Alaska Railroad is laying off workers, but it's unclear how many people are losing their jobs.

Employees were notified Wednesday, railroad corporation spokesman Tim Sullivan said. The corporation is dealing with financial issues, he said.

"We're going through a major restructuring right now, and that includes layoffs," Sullivan said. "We're in the process of talking to employees."

Sullivan would not say how many employees are getting laid off or what parts of the corporation's workforce would see job cuts. He also declined to comment on what else the restructuring might include.

An official public announcement is set for Thursday, Sullivan said.
